Heiromon Gate and The Stone-Paved Path

Passing through the “Heiro-mon Gate,” the main entrance to the castle, a stone-paved path stretching straight ahead appears before you.

Walking along this path, which feels like a green tunnel, brings a sense of calm and relaxation.
During the “Nakijin Gusuku Cherry Blossom Festival” in late January, the cherry blossoms in full bloom on both sides of the path.
U-miya (The Big Court): An Important Plaza Used for Ceremonies

Climbing up the stone-paved path, you will arrive at a plaza called “Umiya (The Big Enclosure).”
This area is said to have been used for ceremonies, but it may feel a bit small due to the trees and plants growing there.
After passing the information board, if you look to the right, you’ll find a slightly more open space.

Continuing along the path, you will find the “Poem Monument of Shigema Utudaru,” a woman renowned for her famous beauty.
Utudaru cherished Prince “Chiyomatsu,” the son of the King of Hokuzan, as if he were her own child, and is said to have protected him with her life during times of war.
It is said that her beauty and kind heart led her to be granted the status of a high priestess, earning the deep respect of many people.

On the left side of the path is a sacred Utaki called “Soitsugi.”
It is said to be a place where people prayed for a good harvest.
Passing through the path on the right, you will finally reach a spot with a spectacular view!
U-chibaru (The Inner Precinct): Enjoy Spectacular Views!

At last, the spectacular view comes into sight!
You can enjoy a Panoramic View of the Blue Sea and the Beautiful Stone Walls.
It’s a perfect spot for taking commemorative photos!

There is some shade here, so it’s a nice place to take a short break while enjoying the view.
Especially in summer, be sure to stay hydrated and take precautions against heatstroke!
Main Citadel: The Site of the Former Main Hall

The next area is the Main Ward, which was the site of the most important building.
It is believed that the Main Hall once stood here, and many foundation stones of the building still remain.
At the back of the Main Citadel, there is a Stone Monument explaining the history of Nakijin Castle.

The stone monument explains the history of Nakijin Castle in four periods.
According to it, the castle was built in the late 13th century.
It also notes that the castle reached the height of its prosperity during the third period, which spanned from the late 14th century to the early 15th century.
“Shigema” Enclosure: The Innermost Section

The “Shigema” Enclosure is located at the very back of the site.
It lies at a much lower position than the Main Citadel and is believed to have been where the retainers lived.

The Stone Walls, green grass, and the distant view of the ocean create a beautiful scene!
