As you head further and further north on Okinawa Main Island, you eventually reach the very end of the road: Cape Hedo (Hedo-misaki)!
Unlike the bustling streets of Naha, this is a “power spot” where untouched nature remains in its purest form.
Between the rugged cliffs, the crashing waves, and the endless blue horizon, the sheer sense of freedom here is enough to blow all your daily worries away.
Standing here, looking back toward the Asumui mountains—the cradle of Ryukyuan mythology—you can truly feel a mystical energy in the air.
Let’s dive into what makes this place so special!

What is Cape Hedo? The Dynamic Northernmost Tip

Located at the northernmost point of Okinawa Main Island, Cape Hedo is where the Pacific Ocean meets the East China Sea.
Unlike the calm, shallow beaches associated with the south, Cape Hedo is defined by its dynamic scenery, where fierce waves carve into the rugged limestone cliffs.
The contrast between the jagged uplifted coral reefs and the deep blue sea is breathtakingly beautiful.

It is also a famous spot for the first sunrise of the year, attracting visitors from across the prefecture and beyond. It is arguably the best place on the island to experience the raw “strength” of Okinawa’s nature.
[Highlight 1] Total Impact! The Cliffside Panorama

The most iconic feature of Cape Hedo is its thrilling cliffs!
As you walk toward the edge of the cape, massive limestone cliffs—formed from uplifted coral and rising dozens of meters high—appear before you.

Looking down from near the observatory is enough to make your legs shake, but the water is a mesmerizing, deep blue.
The panoramic view from the railing really makes you feel the curvature of the earth.

Tucked among the rocks, you’ll also find the “Monument to the Struggle for Reversion to the Fatherland,” commemorating Okinawa’s 1972 return to Japan.
[Highlight 2] Yoron Island: A Glimpse of Kagoshima

On clear days, you can see Yoron Island in Kagoshima Prefecture across the water to the north.
There’s something incredibly romantic about standing in Okinawa and seeing Kagoshima right there!
During the era of U.S. military rule, “maritime rallies” were held in these waters by people on both sides dreaming of Okinawa’s reunification with Japan.
Today, it stands as a peaceful spot where you can enjoy a stunning cross-prefectural view.
[Highlight 3] Gazing at the Sacred “Asumui”

If you turn around at the tip of the cape, you’ll see sharp, rocky peaks towering behind you.
This is Asumui, a sacred site said to be the very first forest created by Amamikiyo, the goddess of Ryukyuan mythology.
The powerful silhouette of these mountains isn’t just beautiful; it tells the story of the deep spiritual culture passed down by Okinawans for generations.
After soaking in the ocean views, be sure to look up at the mountains and feel the mystical power of the island.
